Janie Bickersteth

Janie Bickersteth

I moved to Durham in the ‘90’s and for much of the past decade have taken the magnificent Norman cathedral here as my inspiration. My work is dominated by a sense of place; I have traveled widely in Southeast Asia, as I wrote guidebooks for Footprint for many years. The experiences I had in Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia and Laos have influenced much of my work. More recently, I have become interested in landscape and enjoy getting out of the city regularly to observe the changing seasons.

I studied printmaking at the Central School of Art and Design in London in the 1980s and subsequently taught printmaking at the Guildhall University (at that time, Sir John Cass). I have had several solo exhibitions in London and in Durham and have exhibited in mixed shows in Hong Kong, London, Bristol and the Northeast. I undertake commissions for private clients or companies. At present I am involved in a large scale mural painting at the University Hospital of North Durham.
