Ian Hunter

quoteI have a love of materials, a sensuous pleasure in the innate qualities of wood, wool, stone, slate or clay. It is surprising sometimes to sense the inevitability of a particular substance for a given context.unquote

I originally trained as a painter at Bournemouth College of Art and subsequently as a teacher at Birmingham University. After a number of years teaching art I broke the routine and returned to study at Goldsmiths College and began making my own work again in earnest. Most of my work in the last few years has resulted from artists residencies, (one year at Marlborough college and at Durham School.) This work, (both drawing and sculpture) combined with teaching sculpture to adults and children, forms my professional practice.

The History of Silence

The History of Silence (2002)
wax mixed-media, 67cm high x 58cm wide

I am an intuitive artist. I do not have a precisely formulated philosophy but looking back over the past few years I realise that there have been significant and abiding considerations; a feeling for landscape, particularly the landscape of North Wales, the Lakes and Scotland. I am not so much concerned with the appearance of landscape, though I do draw out of doors, but more with the experience of landscape.

Lastly, and most recently, a preoccupation with trying to combine an experience of landscape, of 'outside' with domestic motifs, to produce pieces which are ultimately meditative in character.
