quoteUnlike other media, I find it is the stillness of painting that allows for the focus on the experience of colour; it induces a sense of lost time, experience and events yet to happen.unquote

I regard myself as an artist whose main interest is in the painting process. I have recently completed an MA in Fine Art at the University of Sunderland, where my main area of concern and research was in the employment of line and colour in painting and the use of a reductive visual representation to convey everyday experiences.

As a painter I find the use of colour to be an exciting and provocative means of expression and consider this to be one of the most important aspects of my work. Even though colours are used metaphorically, the experience of colour for its own sake triggers sensation and memory, as will musical sounds or certain smells.

As a starting point to my work I often use photographs and images from the local landscape; these are developed into a stylised graphic language and reinvented through the use of flat primary colour. This distortion of the conventional space removes any narrative that was present in the original image and questions some of the values accredited to landscape painting, challenging the viewer's assumptions, interpretation and reading of photographically generated images.
